Rule the history books with strategic genius

Age of Civilizations II is a grand strategy game that puts players in control of a nation, challenging them to conquer the world through diplomacy, warfare, and economic planning. Developed by Łukasz Jakowski, with historical depth and a sandbox-style approach, the game allows players to rewrite history or shape an alternate future.

Top Recommended Alternative

Age of Civilizations II is a wargame that gives you the exact tools necessary to steer history in a different direction as you try to win using any means possible whether by maintaining strong relations, abusing military strength, executing economic mastery, or applying strong governance.

Changing the course of history one move at a time

Age of Civilizations II covers multiple historical eras, allowing players to start in ancient times, medieval periods, or even modern-day settings. Each nation has unique strengths and challenges, requiring careful management of resources, diplomacy, and military strategy. Players can form alliances, declare war, engage in trade, and manage economies, making every playthrough a unique experience. However, the game can be overwhelming for beginners due to its various game mechanics.

This tactical game gives you freedom to strategize however you want to get that desired path to victory. The gameplay requires you to think about it analytically as you move pieces that will affect waves of decisions from now and moving forward. Turn-based mechanics and map-based strategy provide an engaging challenge, but micromanagement-heavy mechanics can slow down progress. Moreover, it lacks polish in diplomacy and AI decision-making.

This strategy game allows you to create a brand-new world in whatever shape you wish in a bird’s eye view, able to witness everything. One of its strongest features is customization, allowing players to create their own scenarios, nations, and alternate history campaigns. The modding community has expanded the game's potential, improved balance and adding content. However, this game is not for those who’re looking for action-oriented sequences

A deep but complex strategy experience

Age of Civilizations II delivers an intricate strategy experience, offering unparalleled control over history through diplomacy, warfare, and economic tactics. The freedom to shape nations, customize scenarios, and engage in grand-scale decision-making makes it appealing to strategy enthusiasts. However, its steep learning curve, slow pacing, and unpolished AI may not suit everyone. For those who enjoy deep, turn-based world conquest, it remains a rewarding challenge.

What’s New

  • A new “Ceasefire” option lets you pause costly wars for a set period to rebuild and prepare. Expanded diplomacy and economic tools also include requesting loans, granting loans with interest, and offering debt relief to improve relations. Meanwhile, new management and sandbox options add the ability to found cities and an Administration Policy system that affects taxation, spending, costs, income, and military upkeep.
  • Age of History 2: Definitive Edition is now officially available. Major additions include a new map with 13,892 provinces, expanded diplomacy (new actions like Enforce Peace, Intervene or Join War, Loans and Debt relief, Sanctions, Vassal and Union options, and Found a City), wartime capitulation, faster army recruitment and movement, improved AI behavior, modernized UI/menus, performance improvements, and more.
